All workers are essential
The concept of vocation, Latin for “to call,” previously referred only to a calling to church work. But then Martin Luther emphasized the importance — and even sanctity — of all types of labors. The reformer pointed out that “God doesn’t need our good works, but our neighbor does.”
RJ Grunewald, in a blog post titled “God Makes Pizza,” describes how this looks today: “God is busy about his work in the midst of your work whether you realize it or not. The laundry, the spreadsheets, the phone calls and the cups of coffee are all deeply spiritual because God is at work in the world. He is serving your family, your coworkers and your community through the work you do. God is at work providing ‘daily bread’ through the work that you do, no matter what that work is.”
Blessings or burdens?
Interruptions can be viewed as sources of irritation or opportunities for service, as moments lost or experience gained, as time wasted or horizons widened. They can annoy us or enrich us, get under our skin or give us a shot in the arm, monopolize our minutes or spice our schedules — depending on our attitude toward them.

Clothing Center Update
The Clothing Center remains closed at the time of this writing. I have received some questions on why the center is closed? The sad reality, is it is ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO SANITIZE all items in between clients/families, thus the decision is to remain closed at this time. Clients/families are still able to have items packed and receive them. The OFFICE REMAINS OPEN for regular business hours to assist with Crisis Funding and other needs.
ANNUAL CRISIS FUND HOG ROAST
At the time of this writing, we are within 6 weeks of event time. Many different ideas were discussed including a drive thru/ take out event, with partial/full catering. At this time, with the many unknowns in our surrounding communities, the hard decision was made to postpone the event indefinitely.
We will be holding a stewardship drive this fall to help replenish the Crisis Fund for the upcoming winter months. During 2019 Fiscal Year, we were able to help 101 families with $11,456.84 with emergency utilities & rent assistance.
Monetary donations can be sent to 100 W. Hill St, PO Box 36, St. Olaf, IA 52072. Please put CRISIS FUND in the memo line!
Back to School 4 Kids Project
We held the annual project on Aug 12, 2020. We have packed 160 backpacks thus far, for area children heading back to school. Many area districts begin classes on August 24, 2020. Thank you to all those donating to this great project, along with a reduced crew of volunteers, packing each bag with basic school supplies!

LABORS OF LOVE
Thomas Merton, an American monk, writer and social activist, said, “It is in the ordinary duties and labors of life that the Christian can and should develop his spiritual union with God.” As the United States observes Labor Day, may we find meaning not simply in marking summer’s end but in celebrating the ways nearly all “duties and labors of life” can empower ministry and faith.
Whether as a dentist, parent, artist, teacher, mechanic, gardener, city councilor, farmer, day laborer, attorney or anything else, a Christian can begin each workday or shift by praying for opportunities to serve whoever they’ll encounter. We also can pray for and seek ways to grow in “spiritual union with God”: cultivating spiritual fruits; actively loving God and neighbor; seeing Jesus in the vulnerable; practicing humility, gratitude and praise.
